Principal on Special Assignment, Leadership Development

Fresno Unified School District

I am an educational leader and doctoral student focused on applying improvement research and continuous improvement methods to strengthen outcomes for students and improve the systems that support teaching and learning. I work in a large public school district in California, where much of my role centers on coaching new school principals and leadership teams as they develop stronger instructional leadership practices, strengthen collaboration structures, and use data to guide improvement efforts. My dissertation work is grounded in improvement science and examines how elementary school teams implement and refine literacy interventions for African American and Latino students in grades 3–5 through the use of Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and structured team-based improvement routines. This work explores how teams identify priority problems, study variation in student learning and adult practice, and test changes over time with a focus on measurable improvement. Practical measurement is a key component of my approach, including the use of student growth data, observation evidence, and educator input to understand what is working, for whom, and under what conditions. In addition to my dissertation research, I am currently restructuring Fresno Unified’s CASC / Administration Credential Clearing Program to ensure it is grounded in the Improvement Science model and that administrators are not just learning the concepts, but practicing them in real time. My goal is to strengthen the program so participants become active improvement practitioners—developing aim statements, using data intentionally, learning through disciplined inquiry, and building habits of reflection and iteration that translate directly into school-based leadership. My areas of focus include improvement science in school-based contexts, systems thinking, leadership development, strengthening adult learning structures, and supporting teams to engage in continuous improvement in ways that are practical, coherent, and equity-centered.
